How beautiful and exclusive those bags, don’t you think so? But wait, it is not Louis Vuitton. No, it is not Furla nor Hermes nor Kate Spade nor Longchamp nor those famous and expensive branded bags you may ever think. It uses batik, tenun and other Indonesian traditional clothes and it is 100% made in Indonesia.
It is Batik Chic!
It was Novita Yusuf, a bag lover who started the business of Batik Tulis bag on April 2010, after spending 12 years working in a bank. When she decided to resign just to be closer to her family, she wanted to pamper herself by buying a special Collector Item bag. She was tempted to buy a 25 million rupiah bag, but then she changed her mind. She thought, “Why don’t I just make my own line and fill it with 25 million instead of spending it?” Afterward, she started to find information to set up a bag business.
She chose batik as her bag’s material because as a young girl, she used to live in Jogjakarta where her interest in batik started to grow. She also wishes that batik could be also a prestigious item and part of the lifestyle among young generation. Moreover, she realized that there are not many good quality batik bags in the market. So, she decided to choose her bag line as an exclusive good quality bag. She looks for the high quality Batik Tulis and Coastal Batik with good designs from many regions in Indonesia, such as Pekalongan, Cirebon, Madura, Lasem, Indramayu and Batik Papua. She is confident that the strength value of Batik Chic is its ‘one of a kind’ concept.
She says, “When talking about batik, especially Batik Tulis, we can’t say it is cheap or expensive. Because it is an artwork. Imagine, it needs 3 months time to finish one Batik Tulis. High-passioned and skilled batik artisans do it, because they have done it for years. We can’t put a price on that.”
Currently, the specialty of Batik Chic is bag and limited number batik clothes. She mentioned that Batik Chic bags have two lines, one is the regular bags-which are mass-produced, and the other one is Collection Edition. For the Collection Item, she assured that one Batik Tulis cloth is made into only 4 bags, with different models and combined with other premium elements, such as snakeskin. The price is ranging, starting from 600 thousands Rupiah for regular bags and starting from 2 million Rupiah for the Collector Edition. She also offers a more premium and exclusive Collector’s Item, which is made from a rare batik, only for 1 bag. Moreover, Batik Chic also sells accessories such as Ipad case, wallets and also wants to develop Batik Chic second-line for the youths.
In 2012, Batik Chic Sleepers Ulap Doyo, among of the 18 Indonesian handicrafts, has won UNESCO Award of Excelle ce for Handicrafts 2012. A proud achievement to conserve Indonesian heritage.
